Cherry
Products. Sharon Clark, who made a first trip to Makinac Island
the summer of 2004, enjoyed the variety of products made from Michigan
cherries. She recommended Cherry Republic and Brownwood Farms as mail
order sources of cherry chutney, jams, dried fruit and
chocolate-covered dried fruit.
Brownwood Farms has produced premium food products for almost 60
years. In 1945, the grandmother of the current owners and managers
decided to share her cherry butter and
kream mustard, which had been a family secret for generations, with
her community. Over the years, the Brownwood Farms product line
expanded with additional preserves, mustards, barbeque sauces and
spreads. Their cherry barbeque sauce was awarded a 5th place prize at
the
American Royal Barbeque Competition this past year in Kansas City.

Smoked Fish. Jo Anne Bander started seeking out artisan smoke
houses in Maine over fifteen years ago. One that she visited,
Ducktrap River Fish Farm, founded in the early ‘80’s, is the largest
in Maine with 125 employees and over 35 products available direct but
also found in upscale markets throughout the United States.
Ducktrap River Fish Farm began 23 years ago as a trout farm, with a
goal from the beginning to produce wholesome, quality seafood. It uses
the finest fish from the wild and the world's best fish farms and
smokes them over northern hardwoods and fruitwoods using its own
blends of seasonings.

Sullivan Harbor Farm Smokehouse was introduced to Jo Anne and Michael
Bander by their friend, Harry Lord. Still a small-scale artisan
producer, and one of the last independently owned and operated
smokehouses remaining in New England, their Scottish-style smoked
salmon, gravlax,
smoked scallops, smoked mussels, smoked salmon dip and other gourmet
delights are smoked and prepared on their premises. Rather than the
grocery chain market, their niche is mail-order, quality restaurants
and high-end specialty stores. They were named number 1 by Cook’s
Illustrated.
